Software provider Digital Renaissance and Canadian telephone company New Brunswick Telephone Co. plan to resell a new interactive video-on-demand technology they jointly designed for telecommunications and cable companies.

The technology enables consumers to access interactive video services from home, work or school using an industry-based Web browser running on a television and PC.

New Brunswick Telephone (NBTel) recently completed trials of the technology in New Brunswick. Code-named EVOD (Educational Video-On-Demand), the trial permitted teachers, students, corporations and home consumers to use their TV or PC to view educational video titles on demand over NBTel's VideoActive broadband network.

"We're developing electronic services to offer users new and better ways to do everyday things," said Ron Forsythe, multimedia applications manager for NBTel. "Our electronic library and video store concept fits everyone's schedule - it gives consumers instant online access to videos with full VCR control."

EVOD also represents the first large-scale deployment of Oracle Corp.'s video server for Web-based video-on-demand. Allowing delivery to any client device over a wide variety of networks, the Oracle Video Server enables the creation of direct-to-consumer and information-on-demand applications.
