There's one big difference between guns and cars. It's easier to advance the argument that we don't need guns than we don't need cars. Your average liberal voter (to use the modern usage) won't try to argue against car ownership or usage, because the benefits of having a car would make that a losing argument in a hurry. Only the most dedicated Sierra Clubbers argue for a sharp reduction in automobile ownership. And a lot of these folks put their money where their mouth is by using light rail or bicycles. (I dismiss those wannabees who run around in those execrable smokeblowing Microbuses.) I do my part by driving a car which got 50 mpg until I got these Michelins. My mileage is more like 40 now, with no change in tire size! :-(
To the thread in general:
I do try not to get suckered into claiming "I need my guns". I sorta do need my car though. While the home-defense argument is far from over, I'd rather restrict myself to issues of public safety and conduct. So portraying NRAers as grenade-carrying supremacists is as far off limits for me as portraying Handgun Control members as a buncha crypto-Commie social engineers. (But boy, the cheap shots do tempt sometimes :-) )

Okay thread, I'm off for Thanksgiving break. I'll deal with the coming tidal wave of firearms &related issues in December :-)
