Australian PMI Up 4.8 Pts To 47.2 In June Vs May -PMI
01-Jul-2012
By James Glynn

SYDNEY--Activity in Australia's manufacturing sector continued to contract in June, but at a reduced pace, according to a survey published by the Australian Industry Group.

The Australian Performance of Manufacturing Index was 4.8 points stronger in June from May at 47.2 points, still below the reading of 50 points which separates expansion from contraction

The high Australian dollar and the introduction of a carbon tax from this week were cited as key concerns for the industry. Only four of the 12 manufacturing sub-sectors surveyed recorded an expansion in June.

"The contraction afflicting manufacturing extended into its fourth month in June as the high dollar, domestic and global uncertainties, the slump in residential and commercial construction and concerns over the impacts of the carbon tax weighed on the sector," said Innes Willox, AIG chief executive.
