Silly me. I hadn't done that simple arithmetic. They could recoup this cost in the first day of sales.

The profit margins being what they are, we can see that the number of iPads Apple would have to sell in order to recoup the total cost of the settlement in profits would be some small multiple of the above figure. Maybe three times. So the whole first weekend of sales. :-)
