"They have their own health care and their own retirement .. they don't participate in Social Security."

There are a lot of myths about Congressional salaries and benefits. One of those myths is that they don't pay into Social Security. They DO pay into Social Security. Prior to the mid-80s they didn't pay nor did they collect from it unless they qualified based on other employment. The same was true of all Federal employees. Federal employees now pay into Social Security as do Members of Congress.

Members of Congress also have the same health care insurance that is made available to all Federal employees. No difference. There are a number of different plans from which they can choose that vary in price depending on the benefits that the plan provides. Plans that provide better coverage cost them more. Plans that don't provide as much coverage cost them less. The government pays a portion of their premium.

I don't know how their insurance plans stack up to other employer based plans but their health insurance is provided by the same companies as many other citizens' plans (i.e. Blue Cross, Aetna, etc.)

Don't misunderstand the purpose of this post. I have no love of politicians. I'm just setting the record straight in terms of information concerning their benefits. I personally NEVER vote for an incumbent because of their track records of utter failure to govern. I wish that others shared my point of view but they don't. The record shows that most incumbents are re-elected. Rinse and repeat .....
