I find it's better to stay away from theory and the philosophy of politics and instead dwell on the practical failures of the nanny state.

It opens up doors to tell them I understand the attraction of socialism ( I do ) and how and how I wish it was possible to make it work ( I do ) but that is just isn't practical given human nature.

And if they object sit back and allow them to try to come up with socialist successes. That can be amusing.
