I would *love* it if Apple would come out with a $199 tablet in the 5-7" range with 3G or LTE.

I'd buy it, in a heartbeat.

Apart from pricing Google has set a low target for Apple on a mini-iPad. No cellular, no rear facing camera, limited storage. Apple can come out with a low priced base model and still preserve overall ASPs with higher priced models with more storage and cellular.
It will be interesting to see what they do come up with. As far as the features/pricing battle goes, Apple has an advantage with their unmatched supply chain management and their ability to command volume discounts. But Google and Amazon have an advantage in being willing to sell their tablets below cost.

If Apple offers a tablet with a much better feature set than Google or Amazon, at a price that is not more than a hundred bucks more, G and A will have to go back to the drawing board.
