Love the size. I do expect it to meaningfully cannibalize existing iPad sales. But better Apple eat their own than have someone else take bites out of them.

What do apple devotees think of the less than 8 inch ipad? Seems like a defensive move - nothing apple has done for the last 8 years!
I think that so far it's just a rumor. I don't think I'm going to sit here and second guess Apple management based on that.

Fwiw, Apple and Steve Jobs have steadfastly promoted the idea that anything less than current iPad size is DOA for what the iPad is good at. I still totally agree with that. For Apple to come out with a smaller size, if true, must certainly be an indication that the iPad is losing steam. I see no other reason for Apple to release a device that requires pencil-thin fingers to operate.

Just an fyi: My current contractor is moving to Windows tablets, just because it is Microsoft. Has Microsoft changed the game?

At this point, I think it is likely. I also think a price point of $249 would do just fine against the handicapped $199 devices. Apple can build things cheaper these days so they could still protect their profit margins at that price probably.

Also, I think there may be a tie-in to the Apple HDTV. iPhones and iPod touches are great to use as a remote but follow the owners around. The iPad might hang out near the TV but it is a bit awkward to use as a remote. A smaller iPad that you were comfortable leaving near the TV to use as a remote but that you could also check your email and such would be something I think I would by (and we already have one of everything else).

Apple would be stupid not to build a 7" iPad

iPad mini works as a name for it, though the name doesn't really matter.

Go for the jugularâ„¢.
