  • WASHINGTON — Chrysler is recalling 1,689 2012 Jeep Compasses and Patriots because fuel leakage could occur, increasing the risk of a fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association.

"Some vehicles may have been built with a fuel tank assembly containing a damaged roll-over valve," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "In the event of an impact or roll-over, fuel leakage could occur, increasing the risk of a fire."

The affected Patriots and Compasses were built from December 17, 2011 through January 2, 2012.

Chrysler said it is not aware of any accidents, injuries, fuel leaks or fires related to the defect in documentation filed with federal safety regulators.

Jeep dealers will replace the fuel tank. The recall is expected to begin in June. Owners can contact Chrysler at 1-800-953-1403.
