HP had such a touch screen on a model offered in the early 1980's. It did not sell well at all - and of course was not multitouch....

I remember it well. Three decades ago I worked for an airline which wanted to simplify the reservation system. They were going to change their system that uses HP touch screen CRTs. My assignment was to interface with HP and wrote computer programs that would shake hand between HP and the mainframe (IBM) host. It had some promise to get it off the ground, but early testing showed the system was not reliable. Airline reservation system requires 99.99% accuracy, otherwise someone who plans to fly to Bermuda might end up in Timbaktu.

Little that I expected, a couple of decades later, the mainframe became a dinosaur.
