Here, the most importantly benefit to having insurance is the in network discounts providers have to allow. In tejek's example, without insurance he would pay for the $200 visit. With high deductible insurance, even though the deductible isn't met the provider will take a co45 write-off of maybe half, then you pay the remainder. Still much better than paying the full amount. If the provider isn't in network then you pay the full amt.

When my daughter set up her practice I advised her not to go in network with ANYONE. While it took her longer to get rolling, now she doesn't have to take the discount hit ever, andmthe difference in her earnings will reflect that forever. But it also means she can only see kids with well off parents. And no Medicaid, and she could really help a lot of those kids, but you don't get paid fair compensation for them.
