Europe's Telecom Standards Institute Chooses VocalTec to Bridge Internet-to-Phone Gap

By "Globes" correspondent

VocalTec communications today announced that TIPHON, a technical body of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), launched TIPHON Net, a global testing platform to develop standards to facilitate interoperability between IP telephony equipment and carriers. TIPHON stands for Telecommunications and Internet Protocol Harmonisation Over Networks.

The first demonstration on the way to establishing TIPHON Net was launched with a PC-to-Phone call over the Internet using the VocalTec client/server Internet telephony solution. The phone call was made from a PC running the H.323-based Internet Phoner software at the 4th Annual ETSI TIPHON meeting in Vienna, Austria.

The VocalTec Telephony Gatewaytm routed the call over the IP networks of PIT Austria and France Telecom to a regular telephone in Sophia Antipolis, France.

Karl Heinz Rosenbrock, ETSI General director, received the call and addressed the assembled TIPHON members in Vienna, saying "TIPHON is a flagship or project for ETSI, instrumental in helping bridge the gap between the world of traditional telecoms and the telecom relates areas of the Internet".

"Being the world pioneer and acknowledged leader of the Internet telephony emerging market, VocalTec is committed to the further development of quality IP telephony solutions", said Elon Ganor, CEO and chairman of VocalTec' Communications. "VocalTec is committed to the advancement of standards that will drive Internet telephony into the mainstream of the communications industry. We are proud to participate in this project and appreciate the expertise and leadership that ETSI contributes to this industry".
