I think he and Axelrod neutralized it as an 2012 issue. That's all politically a Democrat could do. Aside from what happened May 1, 2011.

Democrats at the national level learned from Bush/Rove in 2004. Romney has a no win position there. The best he can do is a draw. And Obama can still prevail in the debates by using his superior knowledge, and Romney can falter there by hesitating or giving a wrong answer. Kennedy prevailed over Nixon partially by "knowing" geography and naming Quemoy and Matsu, which probably very few voters could even locate on a map, in 1960 or 2012, or give their current names.
