An incumbent President has a lot of advantages in debates.

In 2008 there was no incumbent, in 2004 Bush prevailed, in 1996 Clinton prevailed, you have to go back to 1992 to have an incumbent President who lost a debate, where Bush looked at his watch and misunderstood a question. Before that, Carter in 1980.
