Damon Evans, SINGAPORE: Santos has announced Australia’s first commercial shale gas well with encouraging results from the Cooper basin. Going beyond expectations, the vertical Moomba-191 shale gas well flowed gas at a stable 2.6 million cubic feet per day (cf/d). The well could be producing by October, two years ahead of Santos’ initial expectations for first shale-gas sales. The hole was drilled to 3010 metres on the flank of the Nappamerri Trough and targeted the Roseneath, Epsilon and Murteree (REM) shale. Its gas will be fed into the Moomba gas hub as it was drilled only 350 metres from an existing pipeline connector and 8 kms from the plant, not because it is profitable. Although the flows from the Moomba-191 well are encouraging, flow rates will need to be significantly higher...
