Speaking of NZ...

The Hobbit : An Unexpected Journey - Official Trailer

Far over the Misty Mountains cold,
To dungeons deep and caverns old,
We must away, ere break of day,

To claim our long-forgotten gold.

The pines were roaring on the heights,
The wind was moaning in the night,
The fire was red, it flaming spread,
The trees like torches blazed with light.

Economically, NZ is bad compared with Canada for earning a living. Pay rates are about half those of Canada. But it's a much better climate. You can live a sub tropical life in the far north or a sub Antarctic life in the deep south. A temperate life is available in Auckland and that's just 4 hours drive from excellent skiing which lasts for 4 months.

Apparently NZ's debt to GDP ratio is still lower than many bust countries but at the rate we are going backwards, that's not much comfort.

Sociologically, there is carnage, with drugs, alcohol, violence and murder now normal. Murders barely make the news papers these days whereas in my memory, a murder was front page news for days. Child murder by "caregivers" is normal too, thanks to an out of control welfare state of more bludgers than producers with swarms of producers fleeing to Australia and elsewhere. There are about 1 million producers and 3 million bludgers, spivs, sinecures and snouts in the trough. Virtuous Victorian Values are a weird idea these days. People keep up a brave front and pretend it's still the good old days, but they know it's not.

There is no Tradable Citizenship, so it's one of those barbaric atavistic tribal countries run on communist totalitarian principles with fascist economics. There is no innocent until proven guilty, habeas corpus is an after thought, common law is uncommon - see the Kim Dotcom Megaupload debacle and vicious attack on him in cahoots with the FBI. Law is a fig-leaf rather than a shield. Private property rights are trampled by Big Brother. Personal determination is a joke. Everything is prohibited unless specifically authorized, in which case it is compulsory.

Plenty of people have not yet been murdered, though I doubt there is anyone who hasn't been robbed. Some people's injuries from being attacked have not even left major disabling wounds. There is something to be said for Saudi Arabian laws against theft, and removal of hands as punishment. China's capital punishment would cut down on many crimes. Certainly, once somebody has been executed, they wouldn't go on to murder again, as they currently do when they get a chance. Unfortunately, juries have the intelligence of frogs so they have little idea what they are doing in judging crime. Police lack intelligence too so have trouble convicting actual criminals, being far too busy to do so in most cases, but they have all the time in the world for collecting revenue from absurd speed limits and pedantry in stupid vehicle laws.

Unfortunately, most other countries are worse, so NZ is the best of a bad bunch [for me, other than in winter when I like to escape to the northern hemisphere for more light and heat].

Another murder of a little child: <http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10819158 A man has been charged with murdering a two-year-old girl in south Auckland.Leilani Mary-Jane Lotonu'u-Lorigan died at a Manurewa address on June 9.

Inspector Gary Hill said an ambulance was called to the Manurewa house at 5.45am and the toddler was pronounced dead at the scene.

A homicide investigation was launched two days later after a post-mortem examination had been completed.

Michael Joseph Martin, a 23-year-old mechanic from Mangere, has been charged with murder and failing to provide the necessaries of life thereby committing manslaughter.

He was remanded in custody when he appeared in Manukau District Court on Friday.

Mr Hill said a team of 15 officers was working on the investigation.

"Police are victim focussed and want to stop incidents like this from happening. For us it's not just about locking up the offender, it's about ensuring families are provided with sustainable solutions that prevent these tragic crimes occurring in the first place.

Don't think of them as criminals, think of them as organ donors.

But stop the production line for such hideous barbarians which is the welfare state and lack of self-determination. But it's also the lack of backing for Virtuous Victorian Values. It's "anything goes" mentality.

If you don't read newspapers or watch tv, you might not come across such things.
