Hong Kong's Central district office rents cooling by Chris Oliver

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Top-quality office rental rates in Hong Kong's central business district fell 7% from a year earlier, according data compiled for the January-June period by Jones Lang LaSalle. Grade-A rents are falling because investment banks and other companies with large office space requirements are seeking out alternatives in other parts of the city, where new developments provide ample floor space, technological developments and infrastructure improvements, a Jones Lang LaSalle spokesman was cited as saying in a Thursday report by the Hong Kong Standard. Despite the data, the spokesman said demand for office space has remained buoyant, especially for the financial sector, as many companies are gearing up for the development of Hong Kong as an offshore yuan-trading center.
