Total expenditures per patient are around $10k/year for Medicare vs. about $3k/year for private insurance

Holld on now. Medical expenses rise very fast with age past sixty or so. You ought to compare private insurance medical costs of 64 year olds with , say, 66 year olds on Medicare to approximate an apples to apples comparison. If Medicare is 10K per year for all Medicare patients, then it must be a lot less for mid-sixties patients, perhaps less than 5K. A lot of Medicare costs are expended in the last few months of life.

One hint is to see what private insurance charges 64 year olds. I think it's more than 5K for Medicare-level services. At least I pay a lot more than that, at 61, and I am very healthy.

End of life is no joke. In 2006, the top 10% cost medicare around $50,000 per person for just fee for services. It's your right however, to make silly comments.
