Portman is the safe vanilla choice and Rubio is riskier, but would energize the base and would have the benefits you mentioned earlier if Democrats didn't succeed in Palinizing him. As for Rice, both Hillary and Palin ran into trouble gaining support from women voters. It's a trendy notion, but women don't support female candidates on Presidential tickets.
