Militarism ?? do you just dream this up to make yourself feel good ? who was President at the start of WW1 the first progressive your hero wilson, who was also a big backer of Eugenics along with his Buddy margret Sanger. Who was President during WW2 ? Korea ? hell even Nam?

In the context of a political discussion in the US, without a direct statement otherwise, or strong context to suggest your talking about some other group, conservative refers either to the American conservative movement, or to related older ideas (some of which by those who would call themselves liberal).

Conservative also means "reluctant to change or take risks". Communists in the Soviet Union (at least before its collapse) could be considered "conservative" by that definition, but so would liberals/progressive who fight against entitlement reform, school competition, etc.

The two definitions are different concepts (of course you can be conservative by both definitions, but you can be either one without being the other).
