I've seen this argument that McCain chose Palin rather than Romney because of tax returns but I'm not buying it. I don't doubt it was a factor. But there were three far more important reasons: McCain and Romney definitely did not get along; McCain had a serious problem with the far right of the party which Romney would not only not help but would make worse; and Palin, because she was a woman, was perceived to be a big help there.
