RE: SI PORTFOLIO - 8 LOSERS :

Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) -NYSE

On the first trading day in September, VZ had lots of buyers trading 1.5x it's avg daily trading volume. I also noticed that money managers continue to bid up the NG utilities. Both GAS and ATO saw increased volume and good gains. Our SI challenge stocks did not include any of these more conservative dividend payers.

It would be interesting to calculate the net dividend yield in the Buffet portfolio vs that of the SI challenge portfolio. In this low interest rate environment, these dividend payers are beating the 10yr treasury return that Buffet generally uses as his benchmark.I will be watching to see what changes Buffet makes in his portfolio (if any) once the Fed signals a change in rates. Will Buffet be tempted to search for more growth related companies or will he begin to add more to his current picks since an increase in rates really signals that the economy is starting to pick up again.
