mannie -

that is exactly what we thought to do.

we have the original run (which is now just
dirt bottom) but it is covered to keep predators
out, and also an extended run that runs to the
back of the yard which has a lot of grass and
food sources.

we're going to let the older hens into the extended
portion and confine mama cass and her chicks
to to covered run. i just hope there are enough insects
and worms in there for her to feed her chicks. it
looks pretty barren.

anyway, after a couple of days we'll be able to see
if she takes care of them and if she does, we'll gradually
introduce the rest of the flock, or let her and the chicks
out to the grassier part of the run.

i hope the remaining egg hatches. it should by tomorrow.
i also hope that the hatched chick is not a rooster.

i'll take pictures when she brings them out of the coop.
