You are mistaken. "Knuckledragger" is a reference to a human being who conducts themselves on the level of a lower primate, not to the primate. It is usually a reference to someone acting dumber than they should ... someone who makes a practice of ignoring certain facts to present an ignorant and mean spirited (or humorous) display. Sometimes it is used interchangeably with the term "Redneck," which is an unjust stereotype for presumably uneducated white people who perform manual labor.
