Yes, it must have been so incredibly horrible... just visiting all those islands in the Pacific and looking at the land and the terrain was moving... we visited these islands, and many others by ship, of course, but I remember sitting and chatting with one of the other ship passengers, a very elderly gentleman, and he was telling me that the last time he was in those waters was when he was on a mine sweeper during WW II... as he was relating his remarkable experiences, I could actually see his memories reflecting in his eyes...

So right and the Navy left the Marines hanging when they came under attack. Bull Hallsey was lucky to get away with it because the Marines were successful.
