-ALCATEL: Singapore Telecom selects Alcatel's ADSL solution for its
Magix interactive multimedia service

Presswire - November 26, 1997 15:45

M2 PRESSWIRE-26 November 1997-ALCATEL: Singapore Telecom selects Alcatel's ADSL solution for its Magix interactive multimedia service (C)1994-97 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Singapore Telecom (SingTel) has selected Alcatel's end-to-end ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) solution to provide true video, high-speed internet and data access, to its customers via ordinary telephone lines. Singapore Telecom will deploy more than 10,000 Alcatel 1000 ADSL lines before the end of 1997.

Of significance to the industry, Singapore Telecom becomes another world-class carrier to endorse the discrete multitone (DMT) standard for ADSL and the Alcatel solution moves closer to becoming a de facto standard for ADSL services, based on the many large carriers around the world who have selected Alcatel for volume ADSL deployment.

"We choose for the Alcatel solution because it offered us, an immediately available, state-of-the-art solution that meets our
requirements. SingTel's first requirement was to have an ATM based ADSL solution that will grow over time with the changes in consumer requirements," said Paul Chong, SingTel's Vice President Consumer Services.

"We are very impressed by SingTel's achievement to implement the world's largest commercial network for interactive multimedia services," said Jo Cornu, President and COO of Alcatel Telecom. "Magix service will open up a whole new world of service options and lifestyle possibilities and we are delighted to have been chosen by SingTel to help them meet these goals."

In recent months, Alcatel has delivered and installed its ADSL equipment at Ameritech, BellSouth, Pacific Bell and Southwestern Bell in the United States, Telia of Sweden and has signed contracts with many other carriers to provide the Alcatel 1000 ADSL system (Telefonica in Spain, British Telecom in UK, France Telecom in France, Belgacom in Belgium).

Alcatel, the Telecom segment of Alcatel Alsthom, designs, manufactures, and markets complete telecommunications systems.
Activities include fixed switching networks, transmission systems, access systems, mobile communications infrastructure, business networking, submarine cable networks, as well as radiocommunications, space, and defense systems. With operations in over 130 countries, Alcatel is a leading-edge supplier in the majority of its businesses. In 1996, these activities registered total sales of FF 71 billion ($13.65 billion). Alcatel Alsthom trades on the Bourse de Paris and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: ALA). Visit Alcatel via the web at: alcatel.com.

The Alcatel ADSL technology

ADSL technology maximizes the potential of the existing copper telephone wiring serving virtually all homes and businesses to
enable access to a range of data and video services and the Internet at speeds ranging from 25 to 100 times faster than today's 56 kilobits per second analog modems. ADSL does this by putting data traffic on frequencies outside of the voice portion of the telephone line. As a result, customers are able to use simultaneously the data portion of the line while talking on the voice portion. Service providers also can install ADSL lines dedicated to data and multimedia services.

Alcatel's open, standards-based ADSL product line better utilizes the capacity of standard twisted pair copper telephone lines and enables service providers to deploy new services quickly while maximizing their existing networks. With Alcatel's ADSL approach, service providers can introduce high-speed multimedia services on a per-user basis without costly network system upgrades or expensive in-home equipment.

Alcatel's ADSL solution offers both speed and power adaptations, another combination unique to the industry. DMT technology enables the ATM transfer rate to automatically adjust its speed due to varying line conditions and external interference. In addition to flexibility and bandwidth allocation, Alcatel's DMT modem reduces power in the presence of interference from adjacent wires or other sources -- a key advantage for operators as it ensures that the introduction of ADSL will not degrade existing services or vice versa. Operators also can program the speed at which the modem operates in order to provide a fixed-rate service. In all cases, the system is able to determine and run at the highest achievable rate and report any line impairments.
