Stagnant and Backwards Societies Don't Believe in Evolution

By Nadia Khoury

Actually, it makes a sick kind of sense. In countries where indicators of scientific achievement, prosperity and political development are all moving backwards, why would the average citizen feel anything but contempt for the theory of evolution? This is entirely consistent with the growth of a thriving ideology that strives to reduce these societies to medieval, war-mongering slave states -- the golden age of the Caliphate.

Egypt is not alone. Under Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s Islamist government in Ankara, rejection of evolution has become state policy, with Turkish censors blocking discussion of Darwin on the internet. Saudi Arabia’s 12th grade textbook dismisses evolution...

The most shocking, almost horrifying part about this? Less than 4 in 10 Americans believe in evolution, either. That's about four times higher than in Egypt, but still abysmal. Charles Darwin's theory appears to be in most disfavor among the lesser educated and those who attend church most regularly. Big surprise.
