You accurately described life on the 19th-century American frontier. But once people settled down and economic growth began in earnest in a sustainable, scalable way, government and infrastructure were crucial.

Nothing worse than folks enjoying all the modern conveniences, supports and protections who then mythologize a frontier life that they would never have tolerated themselves. Yes, someone could come to your house, kill you all, steal all your cattle and burn your place down and very likely, no one within 50 miles would give a crap.

That's the reality of a lawless frontier world. It's a stupid myth to hold it up as a shining example of anything.

<<<<< folks who don't are probably wingnuts and republicants who take from the government, but are too hypocritical to want to support it. What can you do with people like that? >>>>

Hmmmm? Us against them? Besides the point that police and roads and firemen are almost exclusively the States responsibility (I know some roads aren't), the issue most conservatives have is not spending on essential government responsibilities - BUT rather the reality that the spending path we are on is unsustainable. Anyone who doesn't acknowledge that has no sense of history or has no idea of the problems we face because of demographics. Most of those on the right see this trainwreck coming and want to do something about it before it is too late.
