michael & ian, the argument about rambus usefulness being limited due to rom memory bottleneck is unsightful. you can make the same argument regarding the use of modems; i.e., why upgrade to sdram when the modem is going to slow you down? or you can make the same argument regarding humans; why upgrade to faster ram when you've got a goofy human punching key strokes on the computer - the biggest bottleneck of all? the fact is that 90% of time spent on the computer deals with ram. most of your internet functions are controlled through ram. so you improve the size/speed of ram you increase 90% of your computer time. intel and rambus are working on projects which further adress the other main bottleneck. as for modem speed, a little company called orckit has greatly improved modem access times with its xDSL.
