Melons love sandy soil. Hermiston, OR, is noted for its melons - cantelopes and watermelons. Lots of sandy soil there.

I guess what one is used to see irrigation used for depends on what they perceive it is best suited for. I know of a couple guys who irrigate hay. They make a nice living at it too.
