Only a liberal would see these as the same.

If Mitt Romney received some benefit from his dad knowing people, it (a) likely happened after George Romney left politics, and (b) is totally permissible, ethical, legal, and proper.

If, OTOH, Michelle received some additional benefit because of expectations she could provide influence over a sitting politician, that is not ethical or proper and ought not to be legal.
