Writing a letter and posting it should cost next to nothing these days. Type, print, put in envelope, put stamp on, post along with all the other mail. Cheaper than making a phone call and getting voicemail and phoning back and then there's no record of it.

With email, it's cheaper still. Phoning is hard work as the other person is busy and doesn't want to be interrupted, or isn't there. Presumably your lawyer now has modern devices.

I think part of the problem is that lawyer training is to detach themselves from ethics and those amorphous regular human traits, because what matters is what's legal. They seem to constantly be stealing from clients and otherwise getting in trouble with not just ethics but law. Perhaps familiarity breeds contempt. Arrogance, pride, envy, avariciousness... no doubt they have their occupational hazards.

Legal profession rose at a time majority of the people were not educated. Thus today we are forced to go through them even for mundane cases.

We have in Brazil the so-called "Cost Brasil" which is no more of a bureaucracy that survives the times people were not educated. Thus paperwork must be stamped by bureaucrats to make sure it was done properly.

To be honest with you, the amount of 'jumentos' in this country down here is immense. But the law is made for everyone. Thus the people who knows how to do things properly must go through the same process applied to 'jumentos'.
