A Warmer, Fuzzier Gates? zdnet.com

Executive summary: Another columnist signs onto the ilk brigade. My excerpts are getting out of hand, so I'll quote just the tail end of this one, on the SCO/EU contract thing recently in the news.

One source claiming familiarity with the Microsoft-SCO contract said that Microsoft agreed to settle with SCO because SCO was about to go public with the fact that Microsoft was forcing SCO to pay royalties on all system software shipped, whether or not it included Microsoft Xenix code. Sure sounds like the per-processor OS fees that the DOJ banned Microsoft from illegally extracting from OEMs not so long ago..

All this leads to my choice of title for this regular Microsoft column. Microsoft foes and employees alike often refer to the Redmonian software giant as "The Evil Empire." With this column, I will do so, as well. If the shoe fits, let BillG wear it.

And indeed, that is the title of Ms. Foley's column. I wonder if Columbo can ask for royalties? I guess the appelation is in common use. Jeez, I may have to go back to my old "man of wealth and taste" moniker for Bill, the way things are going.

Cheers, Dan.
