I am well aware of the outflow of tax revenue from California. All that proves is that despite all of the great wealth of the state - the idiots who run it are racing towards bankruptcy. Do you need any more proof of how dysfunctional the state government of California is? Any more proof positive of idiocy?

It reminds me of a team owner who gave a GM an unlimited budget - that was overrun.

Run by idiots - who build billion dollar trains to absolutely nowhere.

That probably doesn't mean what you think it does.

Federal taxation:

California and those northeastern states have high costs of living and high salaries. Those high salary earners in those states have to pay more taxes under our progressive tax policy. The fact that a high income doesn't go near as far in CA or NY or CT, MA as it does in other states is just the tough luck of people who live there. Federal tax rates don't take that into account and are the same nationwide.

Federal spending:

This is heavily driven by payments to retirees. Amazingly, lots of retirees tend to leave places like MA, NY, and CA when they retire. Seriously, I presume family ties must be keeping the old people who live in such states there ... it would be nuts for them to stay for any other reason. Because CA, NY, MA, etc can't keep their old folks from escaping they take their federal receipts elsewhere.

Other things like defense spending - ie where military bases are located - have an impact too. And then VA, MD, WV have high ratios because they're close to DC.
