Did you doctor the publication date?!? I tried to Bing the text you quoted (since you did not provide a link), and I found the text in an article dated 9/6/11, which details the LAST BATCH of Touchpads would be only 200k and would bring the total shipments to 1.1 million. Note that this article was published AFTER your other article speculating on a final shipment of 500k-1m.

HP's last batch of TouchPad tablets will consist of up to 200,000 units as the company looks to quench "unfulfilled demand."

The Digitimes reported that HP originally made orders to Inventec, it's ODM (original design manufacturer) partner, for up to 1.1 million TouchPad tablets. Some 900,000 have been delivered so far. The remaining 200,000 units would be sold as an attempt to help suppliers clear out inventories as well as maintain good relationships with the companies involved.


Anyway, let's not rely on projections for events that already happened. IDC reported HP's Q3 2011 sales:
The company shipped 903,354 units to grab a 5% share of the worldwide market, number three behind Samsung's 5.6% market share.

WebOS, which owned 5% of the worldwide market in 3Q11, dropped to zero in 4Q11

The problem for any company not named Apple is that only Apple is throwing its immense corporate resources into the technology development of the tablet. Everyone else is just going through the motions. Or worse, trying to copy and then make excuses. The reason for that is that Apple has so nailed the cultural/technical meme of the tablet, failure to copy is suicide in the market. Copying, however, gets you into court. Talk about lose-lose.

Meanwhile, as the PC sinks into commercial oblivion, and Apple’s competitors struggle with their tablet products, the Macintosh will continue to sail along, the premium solution for people who, for now at least, need what a classic PC should have offered but never could.

That’s why Mac sales are growing in the Post-PC era. The pickle the rest of the industry is in is almost comical.
