Too late for me to know at the time years ago, but discovered something simple, for me at least.

I needed a simple file server to run camera recording software and share files.

I grabbed an old machine, loaded Win98SE on it. Ran good, I loaded updates and it started puking at last once a day.

I reloaded Win98SE and NO updates, never crashes, still running today, solid as any other computer I have today.
