There's a term, "homicidal maniac." In a nation of 300M people, there are going to be a handful of homicidal maniacs. No way to avoid that.

Furthermore, this attacker left his apartment boobytrapped and police took a couple dozen or so bombs and incendiary devices out of it. Clearly, this guy had the means to have shown up with a backpack full of bombs if he'd been denied access to firearms.

Of the 12 people that died, three (or 1/4) of them were guys who died protecting their g/f's. That's pretty good. Too bad no one was able to fire back at the guy. Unlike what people have assumed, I note the gunman entered from an emergency door at the front of the theater and opened fire on the crowd there in front of the crowd. He's have made a clear and safe target if someone had been armed. But the theater, as the NYT noted, had a gun-free policy.
