I'm not sure if any true short would want an off-setting position. I'm more inclind to believe that a short would want to own some shares long. You can't short into a down tick, but you can sell some shares. They would try to pick a point where a lot of stop losses would be placed.(Techical points or just a peek at the Market Markers book) If the stock drops need that point, offer a lot of shares for sale. The bid drops through the stop losses, triggerring more selling, the bid drops. The short pulls back any remaining offerred shares. Buys back his longs lower, and may cover some shorts.
