>What was Paterno and those administrators thinking?<

IMO Paterno was an incredibly ignorant old man that thought he wasn't doing anything terribly wrong by protecting Penn State from what he thought was a minor sex scandal. In his feeble old mind this was typical homosexual behavior that was probably par for the course in a world he knew nothing about. He was a clueless dolt, not a bad man. You can't judge the actions of a fossil by the same standards you would judge a younger more informed man that would have understood.

I picture my father (who would be in his middle 80s now if he was alive) and I'd be willing to bet anything he would have done the same thing. He probably would have grumbled "damn homos are crazy" and done nothing about it because he was clueless about sexual behavior outside his own mainstream world.

Now if an older man did that to a young girl, I think Paterno (and my father) would have freaked, understood completely, and done something about it. I know that probably doesn't make much sense to younger people that are way more informed and sensitive to these issues, but IMO a lot of these old timers were clueless about aspects of sexual behavior.
