Automobile shutdowns are common and not smooth. Look at the unadjusted claims which dropped to below 340,000.

The S&P 500 is +1.62%.

EDIT

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 337,059 in the week ending July 21, a decrease of 118,201 from the previous week. There were 369,207 initial claims in the comparable week in 2011.

BTW, you posted data for July 7, but today's report is for July 21. The stock market reacted to today's reported data, for the week ending July 21. And to news from Europe on the Euro.

We just got another VERY ugly unemployment insurance claims print. An increase of 280K claiming benefits.

And we just got another sizable decrease this AM. Why. MM? You are playing with the facts.

Meanwhile the 4 week moving average continues to decline.
