Blame parents. When colleges discovered that parents did not want their kids to do the same as they did, colleges started telling the parents that their kids should attend college. After graduating HS in '63 my parents pounded me about the need to go to college and "get that sheepskin!" I had worked after school hours & summers for my Uncle who was a building contractor & being my own contractor was my dream. But I conceded to my parents wishes. After 2 1/2 years studying Plato, Spinoza, the Illiad & other non- applicable construction courses I used the one course I enjoyed, "Applied Logic", & determined I was wasting my time at the U of FL & left. After a year & a half in Vietnam, I came back, went back into construction, took the 2 day intensive test & got my Florida State General Contractor's license...no questions about Plato, Spinoza, etc.<G> Five architects & three engineers did not pass the test. BTW, I have a grandson that has some kind of cognitive disability to apply the written word to practice. He'll never be able to get a college degree. He has a lawn business & knows how to be a trustworthy & dependable worker for his customers...a hard worker. He has $642 dollars in the bank...HE'S 10 YEARS OLD. As an aside, if universities were smart, they would lobby congress to reinstate the draft. That would increase the student population & also, possibly, stop these idiotic wars, by those very students protesting and burning their draft cards. Sorry for the long rant.
