Here's the context: "There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me -- because they want to give something back. *They know they didn’t -- look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. *You didn’t get there on your own. *I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. *There are a lot of smart people out there. *It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. *Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there." So Obama is saying that it isn't enough to be smart and work hard, that there must be something else that makes one wealthy and successful. And he's right, there is something else. The willingness to take the right risk at the right time. And doing it until you get the right combination of smarts, hardwork, risk and timing to be successful. But Obama thinks it is something else. "If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help," he said. "There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business -- you didn't build that; somebody else made that happen." I've already shown that when this paragraph is parsed, it only makes sense if the "you didn't build that" statement refers to "if you've got a business". But to further prove that Obama meant exactly what he said, it boils down to the word "that". The liberals are saying that he was referencing the roads and bridges (plural) with singular pronoun "that". Rather than referencing "if you've got a business" (singular) with the singular pronoun "that". No matter how you slice it, Obama is telling successful American business people that they didn't earn their success. And again, the reason that this won't go away for Obama is that it 100% supports everything he has said in the past. All we have to do is think back to what he said to Joe the Plumber about sharing the wealth. Simply put, Obama doesn't believe that we have a right to what we have worked hard to earn.
