As long as the USB logo is up, you will never get it wrong. If it goes in sideways, make sure the logo is towards you.

This is what to look for on your USB cable: If its a USB thumb drive, make sure it's the light, as they don't have a logo on them.

Btw, usually those two small holes on USB need to be on upper side, that works for laptops and USB's that need to be inserted horizontally. For USB's that need to be inserted vertically, yes your percentage is about right lol
