During the time of the ancient Greeks scientist could experiment and publish their findings with freedom.

During the middle ages if a scientist did science and any of it went against the churches teachings it was called heresy; and the scientist was tortured to death or put in prision e.g. Gallilao, Copericus, or Bruno whom they burned at the stake..

Even old Darwwin waited 20 years to publish is origin of species he was so afraid of the church. That is not having freedom, that is living with constant fear and having the state having its foot on your neck at all times.
