Ehem! You don't really know why he was condemned to death do you? You are just repeating the case as presented by Socrates supporters. Science had nothing to do with his trial. The trial was a political one. Socrates believed that just as you cannot build ship based on the vote of ignorant masses, you cannot also run the state based on democratic vote. He then advised a bunch rich kids of the "birthright" and got them to overthrow the democratic government and run a brutal dictatorship. When the Athenian's finally regained democracy, Socrates claimed innocence for being an old man who just taught philosophy. They forgave him and told him buzz off, but then he went back to enticing overthrow of the government again. This was the "corruption of the youth" that hear about in his trial. Even so, the trial was highly controversial one and the motion to convict was passed by a narrow margin. And even then, death was his choice, because they offered him a chance to go away and live in peace.

Overall, I am impressed by how tolerant the ancient Athenian government was. Today, a similar person would not be shown as much mercy in the US.
