But these people just couldn't get anything done. Everything moves in slow motion.

Some of that is true... and the result of aversion to risk taking (making ANY mistakes). They are constantly under a microscope... especially now with the recent 'hate government' movement.

I just don't see anything within government that seems to function well.

When you turn a faucet, does water come out? Every time? Do the street light come on every evening? Do criminals get caught and prosecuted and sent to jail? When we decide to go to war, does it happen? If you apply for a passport, do you get a passport? Does your drivers license get renewed? Streets cleaned? Mosquitoes sprayed for? Roads repaired? Is currency available so you can buy stuff? Is your car pretty safe? Do you feel like if you're cheated you can sue? Let's see... I think I could go on for a couple of days of this at least.

Part of the problem is all this big and small stuff is taken for granted, and only noticed on the fail. If you turn the faucet and water doesn't come out, it's "the f*cking government", even though you turned a faucet and successful got water the previous 30,000 times.

Everyone wants to cut government, except where it intersects with their personal lives. And at every intersection with their lives, they want it perfect. Perfect isn't cheap.
