You know, I've read several books on the so-called dark ages and middle ages, and they weren't all that dark.

I grant you, barbarian hordes did overwhelm Rome, but out of the ashes of the Roman empire, the phoenix of Europe arose. Civilizations are in a constant process of death and rebirth. It's not unlike our own small lives. We die, but our children follow after us, and after them, their children. It's obviously hard for some people to let go of the past, and some folks never do- always having their eyes turned backwards on some golden time that is probably really only golden in their memory- but life moves eternally forward. And even in times of "destruction" you are really looking at a new base for a rebirth. Unless, of course, we manage to kill all the humans off. Then it's game over :-) - but only for humans.
