They aren't worried about the black vote. Christian blacks may not be big fans of gay marriage, but I am quite certain that the democrats aren't afraid of losing a huge percentage of that voter population. Instead, they are going for the moderate independents who don't have a problem with gay marriage and are hoping that they let this emotional issue overshadow the economic mess we are in.

I agree with you that it seems to be an unusual tactic, but perhaps the democrats see that drastic situations require drastic measures.
