David: I agree that the early competitors have higher margins. That is why I think the prices are going to fall and that the Franklin Tempest isn't going to remain the cheapest around for long. Also, I keep harping about port count and one reason is also that the higher the density, the cheaper the per-port cost eventually. This happened in all hardware and is happening in telephony hardware too.

And I am pretty sure that FTEL went with their own boards because they have a proprietary method of connecting their DSP boards to their datacom boards - a compatibility issue.

I also don't think FTEL has overlooked the fact that they're not as dense as the competition. I think they feel their market doesn't require the density that central offices require. Their market will be the smaller edge sites and that is fine with me. I'll make money if they make inroads into these.

Again, FTEL isn't the only player and isn't the outright technology leader. They're good and will do fine IMO.
