So some bright spark at m ynokiablog had the clever idea of utilising stats provided by Statcounter. This company provides figures based on actual web browsing numbers which it then extrapolates into an estimate of OS market share. Statcounter provides monthly figures for the OS of all current handsets in use here. Whatmynokiablog did what feed in the paramenter for Finland only and came up with a comparative big jump in Windows Phone (W7 Mango) usage. Which is good news for Nokia.A second bright spark notice that you can change the parameters on the chart provided by Statcounter online here. At WMPower User here, the publication changed the parameter from Finland to Europe and bingo spotted a major trend. Drilling into the figures, WMPower User found that W7 Mango had enjoyed an impressive 24 per cent growth to 1.68 per cent of the market in EU in July 2012. Try the same thing for North America like WMPower User did and you’ll see much the same thing. Anyway, this European July figure is the biggest jump since the Nokia Lumia 800 saw was released in Northern Europe back in February 2012 when it managed to jump from 0.69 per cent of the total handset browser market to 0.83 per cent. This jump puzzled both mynokiablog and WMPower User because they thought that Windows Phone fanboys would hold back away from acquiring a handset whilst they waited for Windows Phone 8 (Osborne), especially with the recent leaks about SDKs. In the USA, where the Lumia 900 was released in April 2012, July was also the biggest growth month with the Windows Phone installed base growing 19 per cent. With the Nokia Lumia 900 seeing a price drop to $50, that could result in additional sales. WMPower User speculates that as the number of genuine W7 Mango users grows, word of mouth is driving more sales. It certainly isn’t been through good publicity since Nokia is taking a (justified) hammering in the Press (including from us here at GoMobile News). Any handset manufacturer which kills off two mobile OS offerings – Symbian and MeeGo, whilst simultaneously refusing to manufacture a handset which runs the world’s favourite mobile OS – Android, is bound to be doomed. GoMobile News intends to keep a weather eye on MeeGo given that at the beginning of the month [July 2012] Nokia released the MeeGo PR1.3 update for the N9 handset which includes a number of bug fixes.
